What is a Spondylolisthesis?

This a condition where one bone (vertebral body) has gone forward over another vertebral body. Though there are various causes, the commonest are either degeneration (termed degenerative spondylolisthesis) or spondylolytic spondylolisthesis (usually from a single or repetitive injury where there is a gap in the bone).

What are the Treatments Available for Spondylolisthesis?

X-rays are able to diagnose spondylolisthesis. An MRI is often done to check if the nerves are compressed. If the nerve compression is minimal, treatment for the spinal condition consists of physiotherapy, medications or sometimes a short course of a brace. In cases where the nerve compression is more severe and there is numbness, tingling or pain down the legs, spinal surgery may need to be done to prevent further damage to the nerves. Spine surgery can range from minimally invasive decompression, where the nerve is freed through a keyhole incision using a microscope or a spinal fusion. Transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) is a commonly used fusion technique with good long-term results. Most patients stay 2-3 days in the hospital after a TLIF.
